How does it work when you commission a custom painting?

Custom artwork can be intimidating. You are committing to purchasing something that you haven't even seen yet. You are trusting in the artist to create a piece that is unique and special for you, and also checks all of your boxes! And take it from me, it can be intimidating as the artist too. I have to "read your mind" and interpret your style inspirations, make the piece fit in perfectly to your space and also make sure that you, the client, are comfortable and happy with the process along the way. I know that as the customer, you are not only purchasing a piece of artwork, but you are also investing in me as an artist and you are choosing to let go of control - leaving it in my hands.
I do a lot of custom paintings for clients, and want to walk you through the process and what it takes in creating the perfect piece with me. First, I need to learn about what style of my artwork you are interested in focusing on. Whether that's a landscape inspired piece, a monochromatic painting on paper, an abstract floral or a dreamy abstract on canvas. Next, I ask for any visuals and background info that I can have of the space where the painting will live. How large is the sofa it's going to hang above? Can you send me photos? Who are you as a person and what is your lifestyle like? Colours are my next obvious focus. I need to learn about your likes and dislikes, and if you are drawn to any particular pieces that I've created in the past I will use that as a jumping off point for your custom piece.
Over the years I have learned a lot about myself as an artist through creating custom artwork. These projects can push me to think outside the box. I'm creating for you, not for me at this point. And it is also so energizing and motivating! So if you are thinking of commissioning me to create for you please don't hesitate to reach out. After our initial conversations I will be honest with you and decide whether it is something I can do, and if it aligns with my artistic career path as well. It's so important that the client/artist connection works in order to move forward in the process, as I've learned in the past the hard way. Trust goes a loooong way, and trust me - it's worth it!
