So you just purchased original artwork from a real live artist!  Congratulations!  But what about the framing?  When it comes to framing art, the choices can seem overwhelming.  Do you go the custom route, or do you just buy a ready made frame?  And do you do a wooden frame, metallic, floating frame and so on.  Those many detailed decisions can result in artwork sitting in a closet unseen and unappreciated.  And you're left the same blank walls that you started with.

One of the issues that I find can be a roadblock for clients is the fact that my large paintings on paper are an irregular frame size.  At 22" x 30," these hand made sheets of watercolour paper are just gorgeous, with a natural unfinished paper edge and official Arches Watercolour stamp that takes them to the next level.  And you want to show these features off with your framing, but don't know the best way to do it.   

I'm going to make this super simple for you and lay out my top ready made easy to purchase art frames, and also give you a road map for going the custom route.  So if you do have one of my paperworks pieces, you'll be able to find a frame no problem. 

Here are 4 beautiful DIY frames that will fit my 22" x 30" artwork and are easier on the wallet than custom framing.   

• A client of mine recently used this floating frame from Pottery Barn and it looks stunning.  See how it allows for the natural paper edge to show. 

• I found this super cool Acrylic frame from West Elm.  It is so light and modern, the perfect compliment to my abstract or floral artworks.  

• Ikea Lomviken.  You can always count on Ikea for low priced options.  I like this frame for it's affordable price point and style.  A more traditional look with a matte, available in various finishes.

• The Ikea Ribba Frame is my low price point classic recommendation.  Again, it has the matted look, but it's a great frame if you're waiting to save up for a custom frame or if you are simply on a budget.  

And lastly, custom framing solutions.  I always encourage my clients to have their artwork custom framed.  It will stand the test of time, protect the art and take it to the archival quality level.  If you're in Vancouver, my local framer is "Art Ryan" and he knows my work well.  You can take any of my pieces to him and he will make them shine.  Usually priced around $350, and completely worth the investment.  

With custom framing, I love the floating framed look with a white matte and often a simple white or light wood frame.  This look is timeless, elegant, and it really showcases the artwork beautifully.  Just ask for the overall frame size to be close to 29" x 37" and the proportions will be perfect.  Check out some of my custom floating framed pieces below... and let them be your art framing inspiration guide!
